For the Purple Knights, junior Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington Memorial) and sophomore Aaron Vine (Saratoga, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) tallied unassisted goals, while senior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) stopped three shots. Saint Michael’s (4-7-1, 2-5-1 NE-10) snapped a four-game winless skid with the victory.
For the River Hawks, junior Christian Figueroa (North Andover, Mass.) notched a goal and an assist, while freshman Matias Pietropinto (Leominster, Mass.) also scored. Senior Bobby Ritter (North Andover, Mass.) turned aside two shots as UMass Lowell (7-3-1, 5-2-0 NE-10) saw its three-game winning streak come to an end.
UMass Lowell opened the scoring midway through the first half, as Figueroa headed a pass from sophomore Dale Totman (Conway, Mass.) off of the left post and in for his third goal of the season.
Sherman evened the score for the Purple Knights 13 minutes into the second half on a great individual effort, as he raced along the right side and blasted a shot over Ritter into the top-left corner for the first goal UMass Lowell has allowed in four games dating to September 19. The goal was his fourth of the season, and with 46 career points, Sherman tied Jeff Winterton ’93 for third on the program’s all-time scoring list.
The tie was short-lived, however, as 11 minutes later, Pietropinto received a long crossing pass from Figueroa near the right post and found the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Purple Knights forced overtime with 5:45 left in regulation. Sherman served the ball in front of the net, and after a deflection, Vine gathered the ball alone 15 yards away and rifled a shot top-shelf for his second score of the season. That set the stage for Hall, who took advantage of a UMass Lowell hand ball deep in its own territory, and sent a low shot to Ritter’s right for his first goal of the season and the game-winner.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Friday at Stonehill College at 4 p.m. before hosting Southern New Hampshire University on Wednesday, October 12 at 3 p.m. UMass Lowell hosts Le Moyne College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
