NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. (Oct. 1, 2005) – Merrimack College senior goalkeeper Ted Kakambouras posted his fourth consecutive shutout and fifth in the last six games, but the Warrior offense didn’t score either, as Saint Michael’s senior goalkeeper Patrick Melvin made 11 saves in a 0-0 tie in a Northeast-10 men’s soccer game at Warrior Field on Saturday afternoon.

Merrimack, ranked eighth nationally in this week’s National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, had a five-game winning streak snapped to move to 8-2-1 (6-0-1 NE-10), while Saint Michael’s broke a three-game losing streak to move to 3-7-1 (1-5-1 NE-10).

Merrimack held a 24-7 edge in shots and had the majority of the scoring chances, including two in the second overtime, one saved by Melvin (Belmont, Vt.) and one which rolled just wide. Warrior freshman Manuel Francisco (Lawrence, Mass.) sent a header on goal early in the second overtime which Melvin pushed out of bounds while diving left. Senior Joe Lucchese (Woburn, Mass.) had a chance to end the game with just 18 seconds left, but his shot from 10-yards out rolled just wide right.

Saint Michael’s best scoring opportunity came on a breakaway late in the first half, but Kakambouras stopped Purple Knight senior Jerrod Hall (Bennington, Vt.) at the top of the box. Kakambouras hasn’t been scored on in his last 384:12 of playing time.

Merrimack goes on the road to face Saint Rose on Tuesday, while Saint Michael’s will host UMass Lowell on Tuesday.
