SMC WOMEN SECOND, MEN THIRD AT STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

JOHNSON, Vt. - The Saint Michael's College women placed second, while the Purple Knight men turned in a third-place showing, at the 2004 Vermont Cross Country Intercollegiate Championships on Friday, hosted by Johnson State College. Middlebury College took both team titles.

On the women's side, junior Kim Fahner (Westminster, Vt./Vermont Academy) led the way, as she placed 18th overall in a time of 22:57.7. Classmate Jaime Deacon (Chester, Mass./Wahconah Regional) clocked in at 24:25.3 for a 30th-place finish, while sophomore Heather Rideout (Townsend, Mass./North Middlesex Regional) earned 35th place with a time of 25:51. Rounding out the top five for the Purple Knights were sophomore Jessica Davis (Belgrade, Maine/Messalonskee) and junior Robyn Bratica (Milford, Mass./Milford), who ran in 26:01.8 and 26:35.9, respectively.

For the men, junior Lionel Welch (Worthington, Mass./Wahconah Regional) led the way, as he placed ninth in 29:08. Sophomore Tom Lichtenberger (Bloomfield, Conn./Northwest Catholic) was just five seconds behind Welch to finish 10th, while freshman James Heelan (Centennial, Colo./Arapahoe) earned a 26th-place finish in a time of 30:36. Finishing fourth for the Purple Knights was sophomore Michael Kruetz (South Hero, Vt./Rice Memorial) in 31:59.3, while classmate Kevin Labresh (Manville, R.I./Lincoln) finished in 33:02.5.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Friday, October 8, as the Purple Knights take part in the New England Championships, held at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
