COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Sarah Kane’s (Foxboro, Mass.) goal 6:43 into the second half was the difference as Saint Anselm College upset 10th-ranked Saint Michael’s College, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field.

Senior Meg Coleman (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) assisted on Kane’s winning tally, while classmate Lisa Bellantoni (Hanover, Mass.) stopped 12 shots. Saint Anselm (2-6, 2-5 NE-10), led by first-year head coach and 2002 Saint Michael’s graduate Courtney Breen, snapped a five-game losing skid.

For the Purple Knights, senior Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) turned back four shots. Saint Michael’s (4-7, 4-5 NE-10) has lost three straight contests for the second time this season.

Saint Michael’s dominated play in the first half, as the hosts held a 9-2 advantage in shots and a 7-2 advantage in penalty corners in the frame. However, six saves by Bellantoni kept the Purple Knights at bay in the opening period.

The Hawks took advantage of their first penalty corner in the second half. Coleman rifled a pass from the endline to Kane, who fired a shot past Anderson for her first goal of the season. Saint Anselm hung on from there, despite surrendering 12 penalty corner attempts in the second half, including one with no time left on the clock.

Saint Michael’s visits defending conference regular-season champion Bryant University on Saturday before hosting top-ranked and undefeated University of Massachusetts Lowell on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m.
