Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Judy Cronin’s (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) goal with just more than 10 minutes left in regulation help propel Saint Michael’s College to a 2-2 tie with the University of Massachusetts Lowell in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Purple Knights, freshman Laura Wesley (Chula Vista, Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) tallied her first career goal, while classmate Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) stopped five shots for Saint Michael’s (5-4-2, 3-4-1 NE-10).
Freshman Laura Donigian (Wakefield, Mass.) led the River Hawks with a goal and an assist, while junior Jody Graham (Billerica, Mass.) also scored. Freshman Katelyn Campopiano (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded seven saves for UMass Lowell (5-4-1, 3-2-1).
Graham opened the scoring in the 13th minute, as her shot from the center of the field found the lower right corner. The River Hawks, with the wind at their backs, dominated play in the opening period and amassed a 10-3 advantage in shots in the frame.
The Purple Knights evened the score 11:27 into the second half, as Wesley headed home senior Devin Camerlengo’s (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) corner kick. Five minutes later, however, Donigian gave UMass Lowell a 2-1 lead as she pounced on a rebound and scored from point-blank range.
With 10:33 left in regulation, Saint Michael’s pulled even for the final time, as senior Karyn Sporer’s (Southborough, Mass./Marian) direct kick was stopped by Campopiano, but the rebound went to Cronin, who converted for her third goal of the season. Both teams had one strong chance to end the contest in the second overtime, but both shots sailed just above the crossbar.
Saint Michael’s visits league rival Assumption College on Saturday before hosting in-state rival Johnson State College on Wednesday, October 6 at 3:30 p.m.
