COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College scored four times in the first half to pull past Saint Anselm College, 7-3, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Wednesday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex. The contest marked the return of second-year Saint Anselm coach Courtney Breen, a 2002 Saint Michael’s graduate and former field hockey standout. For the Purple Knights, senior Amber Holcomb (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and sophomores Hannah Wolfe (Bow, N.H./Bow) and Chelsea Kimball (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) each scored a pair of goals, while freshman Andrea Slaven (Danvers, Mass./Bishop Fenwick) also scored. Senior Johanne Skelley (Wolfeboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) added a pair of assists, while junior Tina Nardi (Rupert, Vt./Salem Central) stopped one shot for her seventh win in the last eight contests. Saint Michael’s (7-4, 7-2 NE-10), ranked eighth in Tuesday’s STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches’ Poll, improves its record to 5-0 on its new turf field, and had its highest-scoring contest since a program-record 10-1 win versus American International College on Oct. 25, 2003.
For the Hawks, sophomore Michele Baca (Franklin, N.H.) and freshmen Stephanie DuVal (Hanover, Mass.) and Laura Urko (Attleboro, Mass.) each scored goals. Freshman Sarah Oakes (North Yarmouth, Maine) turned aside seven shots for Saint Anselm (0-10, 0-10 NE-10).
Saint Anselm opened the scoring 15 minutes into the contest on Baca’s first goal of the season, assisted by freshman Lindsey Kennedy (Westminster, Mass.). Saint Michael’s, however, countered with three goals in the next 10 minutes to take the lead for good. Urko pulled the Hawks within 3-2 with 7:39 left in the half, but Wolfe’s second goal of the contest, and eventual game-winning goal, gave Saint Michael’s a 4-2 lead at intermission.
The Hawks again pulled within one, 4-3, 11 minutes into the second half on DuVal’s first goal of the season, assisted by freshman Sam Rowe (Chelmsford, Mass.). However, goals by Slaven, Holcomb and Kimball in the final 21 minutes sealed the victory for the Purple Knights.
Saint Michael’s plays its next two games on the road (at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Saturday at 1 p.m., and at Franklin Pierce College on Tuesday at 6 p.m.) before hosting Assumption College on Saturday, October 8 at 3 p.m. Saint Anselm returns to action on Saturday at Southern Connecticut State University at 1 p.m.
