Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Jenn Walker (Lyman, Maine) scored with 1:09 remaining in the first overtime as fifth-ranked Bentley College bested ninth-ranked Saint Michael’s College, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Falcons, senior Kayla Gogos (W. Brookfield, Mass.) and freshman Heather Buda (E. Kingston, N.H.) also scored, while junior Kristin Johnson (Reading, Mass.) and freshman Meaghan Johnson (So. Easton, Mass.) combined for four saves. Bentley (8-1, 6-1 NE-10) has now won seven straight contests.
For the Purple Knights, junior Meg McCarthy (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) assisted on goals by senior Linette Letendre (Wellfleet, Mass./Northfield-Mt. Hermon) and junior Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug). Senior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) turned back 12 shots for Saint Michael’s (4-6, 4-4 NE-10).
Bentley opened the scoring just two minutes into the contest, as Gogos gathered a rebound and slammed one past Hunter for her fourth goal of the season. The hosts countered less than 10 minutes later, as McCarthy slipped a pass off of a penalty corner to Pickman for her team-leading third goal of the year. Hunter kept the score tied for the rest of the half, notching eight saves in the period.
The Falcons retook the lead eight minutes into the second half, with Buda netting the goal off of a penalty corner from sophomores Mary Rogers (Watertown, Mass.) and Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson, N.H.). The Purple Knights again responded, as less than three minutes later, Letendre netted her second goal of the season, a shot which proved to be Saint Michael’s only one of the half.
The Purple Knights dictated play for most of overtime, amassing four penalty corners and four shots to just one penalty corner and two shots for the Falcons. It was Bentley, however, that scored the game-winner, as senior Kerry Kopec (Bethel, Conn.) fed Walker for the score.
Saint Michael’s resumes play on Thursday, as the Purple Knights host league rival Saint Anselm College at 4 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
