Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Phil Torres (Woonsocket, R.I.) turned back seven shots to earn the shutout as American International College blanked Saint Michael’s College, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
Junior Charles Branche (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Norbert Dusza (Holyoke, Mass.) tallied goals for American International (6-2-0, 4-2-0 NE-10), which has won three straight games, all on the road.For the Purple Knights, junior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) stopped five shots. Saint Michael’s (4-4-1, 1-4-0) has dropped four straight contests following a 4-0-1 start.
The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the 38th minute, as Branche connected for his first goal of the season off of a free pick pass from senior Kevin Ryan (Carenage, Trinidad). The score remained 1-0 until the 81st minute, when Dusza’s penalty kick beat Melvin for his fourth goal of the year.
The Purple Knights maintained pressure for most of the second half, but Torres stood tall, recording five of his seven saves after intermission to earn his second shutout of the season.
Saint Michael’s plays at league power University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday at 7 p.m. before hosting Bentley College on Sat., Oct. 2 at 1 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
