WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior All-America Mary Rogers (Watertown/Watertown HS) drilled a shot from just inside the circle with under seven minutes to play for her 14th goal of the season and the game-winner as the Bentley Falcons edged St. Michael’s College, 3-2, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Thursday night.

Bentley, ranked fourth nationally in Division II this week, remained atop the NE-10 standings with the win, improving to 7-1 overall and in the conference. It was the 25th win in the last 26 regular season games for the Falcons.

Rogers, the reigning Northeast-10, ECAC Division II and womensfieldhockey.com Division II Player of the Week, broke a 2-2 tie with 6:32 left. She handled a penalty corner from Lindsey Harrington (Atkinson, N.H./Timberlane HS) and rifled it past St. Michael’s netminder Tina Nardi (West Pawlet, Vt.).  It was her tenth goal during Bentley’s current four-game winning streak and 59th of her career.

Harrington and Rogers had teamed up in the game’s opening minute to give the Falcons the early lead. Following a Rogers’ shot off a penalty corner, Harrington deflected into the cage for her seventh of the year.

After the Purple Knights (4-4, 4-2 NE-10) used a goal from senior Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn.) to even the game at 1-1, Bentley regained the advantage less than 90 seconds later, with 13:53 left in the first half. Sophomore Cristina Sergi (Weston/Weston HS) tallied her second of the season, scoring off a rebound after a corner.

Pickman came back to score her second of the night and square the game at 2-2 with 20:37 left, off an assist from junior Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J.).

Bentley had a substantial edge in corners, 10-3, but shots were much closer, with the Falcons attempting seven and the Knights five.

Bentley will be back at home Saturday for a 12 noon meeting with Saint Anselm.
