Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshman Gijs Roodbeen’s (Nijmegen, The Netherlends) goal 90 seconds into the contest was the difference as Franklin Pierce College edged Saint Michael’s College, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference men’s soccer action on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field.
Freshman James Thorpe (East Longmeadow, Mass.) turned aside five shots for Franklin Pierce (6-2-0, 3-0-0 NE-10), while junior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) notched nine saves for Saint Michael’s (4-3-1, 1-3-0 NE-10).The Ravens controlled the tempo early. Roodbeen’s second career goal gave the visitors all the scoring they would need, but Franklin Pierce peppered Melvin with many quality shots in the first half, including a shot that Melvin deflected off the post and through the goal mouth.
The Purple Knights could not muster many scoring chances in the second stanza, as Saint Michael’s was outshot in the contest, 20-8. Junior Jerrod Hall’s (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) four shots paced the hosts.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host conference rival American International College at 2 p.m.
