Courtesy Saint Anselm Sports Information Phone: (802) 654-2929MANCHESTER, N.H. (September 20, 2005)—Saint Anselm scored early and held on to win, beating Saint Michael’s College, 1-0, in men’s NE-10 soccer action at Melucci Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Hawks improve to 4-2-3 (2-1-1 NE-10), while the Purple Knights fall 3-5-0 (1-3-0 NE-10).
Tim Hubbard (Marshfield, Mass.) kicked in a header from Jesse Milling (Columbia, S.C.) in the 16th minute, giving the Hawks the early lead and game-winner.
The teams battled closely in the first half, with both sides attempting six shots. In the second half, however, Saint Anselm held a three-shot advantage, sending in 10 to Saint Michael’s seven.
The Purple Knights had two close chances to tie the game in the 84th minute when Aaron Vine (Saratoga, N.Y.) sent a point-blank shot into Saint Anselm goalkeeper Tim Galligan (Framingham, Mass.). Vine followed that attempt with a header off a corner just seconds later, but Galligan was there again.
Saint Michael’s goalkeeper Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt.) made seven saves for the Purple Knights. Galligan made eight for the win.
Saint Anselm hosts Merrimack at 11:00 a.m. Saturday in a NE-10 contest. Saint Michael’s hosts Le Moyne for a conference match at 1:00 p.m. Saturday.
