PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN BEST FRANKLIN PIERCE, 8-1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                      FOR MORE INFORMATION September 20, 2004                                                                  Contact: Seth Cole                                                                                                 Phone: (802) 654-2537 COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College won all three doubles matches and cruised to an 8-1 victory versus Franklin Pierce College in Northeast-10 Conference women’s tennis action on Monday on the outdoor courts. Saint Michael’s improves to 2-0 overall and in league play, while Franklin Pierce slips to 3-2 (1-1 NE-10). Senior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) paced the Purple Knights, as she notched a straight-sets win in No. 1 singles and partnered with freshman Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham) for an 8-5 victory at No. 1 doubles. Wood also recorded a 6-1, 6-2 triumph at No. 6 singles. Sophomores Cara Bednar (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) and Liz Clemente (Latham, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) also teamed for a doubles victory, while each earned a two-set win in singles action. Freshman Megan Conway (Lynnfield, Mass.) won twice as well, including an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles with junior Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional). For the Ravens, Michelle McConnell posted the lone win in No. 3 singles.   Saint Michael’s plays three more matches in its fall season, all on the road, beginning with Saturday’s 12 p.m. contest at Lyndon State College. The Purple Knights also take on league rivals Pace University and Bryant University Oct. 9 and 10, respectively, before resuming their schedule in March.
