Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) recorded her second shutout of the season and junior Nikki Pickman (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) tallied the game’s lone goal as No. 10 Saint Michael’s College edged Southern Connecticut State University, 1-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.
Hunter turned aside two shots for Saint Michael’s (4-4, 4-2 NE-10), which won for the fourth time in its last five contests. The Purple Knights snapped Southern Connecticut’s five-game winning streak and handed the Owls their first league loss.
Sophomore Shauntaye Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) turned aside four shots for Southern Connecticut (5-3, 5-1).
After a scoreless first half that saw Saint Michael’s hold a 7-3 advantage in shots, the Purple Knights broke through 10 minutes into the second stanza. Junior Meg McCarthy (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) rifled a shot that Williams kicked aside, but the rebound went directly to Pickman, who connected for her second goal of the season.
The Purple Knights’ defense took over from there, as the hosts held Southern Connecticut to just four shots and one penalty corner in the contest.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Tuesday, as the Purple Knights visit league-rival Franklin Pierce College at 4 p.m. The Purple Knights’ next home contest is Sat., Sept. 25 versus fifth-ranked Bentley College at 1 p.m.
