PURPLE KNIGHT WOMEN WIN SEASON OPENER VERSUS LE MOYNE, 5-4

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College won a pair of three-set singles matches to edge Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne College, 5-4, in season-opening women’s tennis action on Saturday at the Tarrant Recreational Center.
The deciding match took place in fifth singles, as sophomore Liz Clemente (Latham, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) rallied from one set down and a 4-1 deficit in the third set for the clinching victory. Clemente also teamed with classmate Cara Bednar (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) for an 8-4 win in third doubles, while Bednar was triumphant in No. 3 singles. Senior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) notched a two-set victory in first singles, and junior Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) and freshman Megan Conway (Lynnfield, Mass.) partnered for a No. 2 doubles victory.
The Purple Knight women return to action on Monday, as Saint Michael’s hosts league-rival Franklin Pierce College at 3:30 p.m.

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Freshmen Andy Samara (South Burlington, Vt.) and Luke Lombardi (Manchester, Mass.) rallied for three-set victories in their collegiate debuts as Saint Michael’s College bested Northeast-10 Conference rival Le Moyne College, 6-3, in season-opening men’s tennis action on Saturday on the outdoor courts.
Both Samara and Lombardi dropped the first set of their respective singles matches, but posted 6-2 wins in the decisive third set. Samara partnered with sophomore Andrew Bolduc (South Burlington, Vt.) for an 8-2 win in No. 2 doubles, while Lombardi teamed with classmate Torr Terranova (Madison, Conn.) for an 8-4 win in No. 3 doubles. Terranova also posted a two-set win at No. 5 singles in his collegiate debut, while Bolduc notched a three-set victory in fourth singles.
Saint Michael’s is off until Wed., Sept. 29 when the Purple Knights host league-rival Franklin Pierce College at 3:30 p.m.
