COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College scored four goals in a 6:12 span late in the first half and held off Franklin Pierce College, 4-1, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Wednesday on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.

For the Purple Knights, junior Lindsay Harrison (Brandon, Vt./Otter Valley Union) scored her first two goals of the season, while senior Amber Holcomb (Essex Junction, Vt./Essex) and junior Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount Saint Mary’s Academy) added a goal and an assist apiece. Senior Meg McCarthy (Lunenburg, Mass./Lunenburg) tallied an assist in the win, while junior Tina Nardi (West Pawlet, Vt./Salem Central) stopped one shot for her third straight win. Saint Michael’s (3-3, 3-1 NE-10), ranked ninth in this week’s STX/NFHCA Division II National Coaches’ Poll, has won three straight contests, outscoring its opposition 7-1, following an 0-3 start.

For the Ravens, senior Amy McMullin (Belgrade, Maine) scored on a penalty corner off of assists from classmates Laura Blanchard (Rockport, Mass.) and Anna Ranney (Newport, N.H.). Junior Amanda Pietraszuk (Clinton, Conn.) turned aside eight shots for Franklin Pierce (1-5, 1-5 NE-10).

Saint Michael’s dictated the tempo from the outset, but didn’t open the scoring until 10:54 left in the first half, as Holcomb assisted on Harrison’s goal off of a penalty corner. Less than two minutes later, Holcomb found the back of the net off of a McCarthy assist, which proved to be the game-winning goal.

Franklin Pierce cut its deficit in half less than a minute after Holcomb’s first goal of the season, as the Ravens scored on their lone penalty corner of the contest. The Purple Knights quickly rebounded, however, as Dewey and Harrison tallied goals just 35 seconds apart late in the opening period to give the hosts a 4-1 lead at intermission.

In the second half, Saint Michael’s relied on stifling defense, as the hosts held Franklin Pierce to just one shot in the period, which came with under two minutes to play. Pietraszuk kept the Ravens in the contest with five second-half saves, including several spectacular stops.

Saint Michael’s plays its next two games on the road against nationally-ranked teams (at 10th-ranked Bryant on Saturday at 1 p.m. and at third-ranked Bentley College on Sept. 22) before hosting Merrimack College on Sept. 24 at 2 p.m. Franklin Pierce plays at Southern Connecticut State University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
