Merrimack, which lost 1-0 games to Southern New Hampshire and UMass Lowell at home to start the season, improved to 3-2 overall, 1-2 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael’s fell to 1-4, 0-3.
Senior Lindsay Sheffield (Georgetown, Mass.) scored the game’s only goal with less than 12 minutes to play. Sheffield took a pass from sophomore Hillary McGarr (North Dighton, Mass.) and lofted a 25-yard shot over the goalkeeper and just under the cross bar to give the Warriors their first goal on the new FieldTurf surface.
Sophomore goalkeeper Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H.) kept Saint Michael’s in the game with 17 saves, including a diving stop on a blast from McGarr inside the penalty area. Merrimack sophomore Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, Conn.) needed just two saves to post her first shutout of the season.
Merrimack outshot the Purple Knights 31-9 and had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Warriors play their next three games on the road, starting with Pace on Saturday, while Saint Michael’s stays on the road, facing Georgian Court on Monday.
