Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Tina Nardi (West Pawlet, Vt./Salem Central) stopped six shots as Saint Michael’s College won its home opener versus Stonehill College, 2-0, in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey action on Saturday. The contest marked the first-ever field hockey contest on the College’s newly-built Christopher Duffy Artificial Turf Field at Doc Jacobs Complex.
For the Purple Knights, juniors Ashley Webb (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) and Cassie Dewey (Lebanon, N.J./Mount St. Mary’s Academy) tallied second-half goals off of assists from classmate Lindsay Harrison (Brandon, Vt./Otter Valley Union). The win was the second straight shutout victory for Saint Michael’s (2-3, 2-1 NE-10).
For the Skyhawks, sophomore Dani Ryder (Gloucester, Mass.) turned aside four shots as Stonehill (4-1, 3-1 NE-10) allowed a goal for the first time this season.
After an evenly-played first half that saw few scoring chances, the Purple Knights opened the scoring midway through the second period. Harrison injected a penalty corner to Webb, who settled the ball and rifled a shot past Ryder for her second goal of the season. Ten minutes later, Saint Michael’s tallied a key insurance goal, as Harrison sent a crossing pass to Dewey, who one-timed a shot for her second goal of the year.
The Skyhawks intensified the pressure in the final 10 minutes of the contest, but Nardi was up to the challenge, as she recorded all six of her saves after halftime to earn her second consecutive shutout.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Wednesday, as the Purple Knights host NE-10 rival Franklin Pierce College at 4 p.m. Stonehill next plays at the University of Massachusetts Lowell on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
