COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior Devin Camerlengo (South Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial) and sophomore Mary Lyon (Taconic, Mass./Pittsfield) each tallied first-half goals as Saint Michael’s College held off Bentley College, 2-1, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field.

Freshmen Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) both stopped two shots as Saint Michael’s (4-0, 2-0 NE-10) matched the 2001 team for the best start in the program’s 23-year history.

For the Falcons, senior Cara Magnarelli (Millis, Mass.) netted a first-half goal, while freshman Kristin Stanmyer (New Paltz, N.Y.) and senior Danielle Parsons (Islip, N.Y.) combined for 10 saves for Bentley (0-3, 0-2).

The Purple Knights opened the scoring 6:48 into the contest. Freshman Kelly Boulter (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) lofted a shot that Stanmyer deflected, only to slip on the wet grass. Lyon was able to pounce on the rebound and convert from point-blank range.

Bentley responded less than two minutes later, as Magnarelli fired a low shot to the right of Goldman, with junior Lauren Hobbie-Welch (Clarksburg, Mass.) earning an assist.

The hosts took the lead for good in the 30th minute, as junior Judy Cronin (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) sent a crossing pass into the box that Stanmyer punched directly to Camerlengo. The senior lofted a shot over Stanmyer for the eventual game-winner.

Bentley’s best chance to even the score came 16 minutes into the second half, but Sarah Benson’s (Oxford, Mass.) header caromed off of the left post.

Saint Michael’s plays its first road contest of the season on Saturday as the Purple Knights visit national power and league rival Franklin Pierce College at 1 p.m. Saint Michael’s next home contest is Sept. 21 versus Merrimack College at 4 p.m.
