Phone: (802) 654-1500COLCHESTER, Vt. – For the second time in as many games, Saint Michael's College (1-3-0, 0-1-0 NE-10) was shutout 1-0, this time falling victim to Castleton State College (2-1-0, 0-0-0 NAC) at Doc Jacobs field on Tuesday.
Castleton State scored the game’s only goal just over two minutes into the second half, as Nathan Williams (East Schodack, N.Y./Loudonville Christian) found local boy Tyler Critchlow (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) in front of the net, who was then able to beat goaltender Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River). Critchlow’s shot was just the fourth and final shot attempted by the Spartans, yet it proved to be enough in the end.
Although the Purple Knights were able to dominate the game’s pace, they were unable to slip the ball past the Spartans’ junior goaltender Daniel Gregory (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz), who recorded six saves despite the Purple Knights’ 22 shot attempts.
With 25 minutes to play in the second half, the Purple Knights seemed to get the spark that they needed, when Yoshikazu Ishii (Tokyo, Japan) launched a corner kick in front of the net. Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington Memorial) fielded the kick, and headed it right on net, sending the Spartan goalie nearly parallel to the ground with a dramatic save. Saint Michael's then rattled off 12 more shot attempts before time expired, but was still unable to find any open holes to even the score.
The Purple Knights will return to action on Saturday, as they travel to Southern Connecticut State to take on the Owls at 4:00 p.m.
