COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomores Mary Bullis (Hebron, Conn./RHAM) and Rachel Gallien (Addison, Vt./Vergennes Union) scored 2:36 apart early in the second half as Saint Michael’s College opened Northeast-10 Conference play with a 2-1 victory versus Southern New Hampshire University in women’s soccer action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field.

For the Purple Knights, senior Karyn Sporer (Southborough, Mass./Marian) assisted on Bullis’ game-winner, while freshmen Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) combined to stop eight shots for Saint Michael’s (3-0, 1-0 NE-10).

Senior Liz Wheeler (Manchester, N.H.) notched an unassisted goal for the Penmen, while freshman Nicole Visconti (No. Reading, Mass.) turned aside six shots for Southern New Hampshire (1-1, 0-1 NE-10).

After a scoreless first half that saw the visitors hold an 8-5 advantage in shots, Saint Michael’s scored twice in the opening 5:06 of the second period. Gallien opened the scoring in the 48th minute, as she capitalized off of a corner kick for her first goal of the season. The Purple Knights doubled their lead moments later, as Bullis rifled a shot from outside the box for her second career goal and the eventual game-winner.

The Penmen cut their deficit in half with 13 minutes remaining in regulation, as Wheeler fired a shot off the post, gathered the rebound, and converted on the putback. Saint Michael’s held on from there, as Southern New Hampshire did not have any strong chances to tie the game in the closing minutes.

Saint Michael’s concludes its season-opening four-game homestand on Wednesday versus league-rival Bentley College at 4 p.m.
