COLCHESTER, Vt. – East Stroudsburg University and Merrimack College notched victories on Saturday in the first day of the Doubletree Kick Off Classic, Sponsored by Sodexho Services, held on Duffy Field at Doc Jacobs Complex. In the opener, host Saint Michael’s College fell to East Stroudsburg, 2-1, and in game two, Merrimack blanked Caldwell, 6-0.

In game one, freshman Debbie D’Agosta’s (Paterson, N.J.) goal with 2:48 remaining was the difference as East Stroudsburg (3-0) rallied past Saint Michael’s (0-2). Junior Charlene Conklin (East Stroudsburg, Pa.) assisted on the game-winner, while senior Lisa Howell (Airville, Pa.) also scored for the Warriors in the 49th minute. Sophomore Samantha Marina (Phillipsburg, N.J.) turned aside three shots for the win.

For the Purple Knights, freshman Kelley Ruch (Woodstock, Vt./Woodstock) scored her first career goal, unassisted, 5:54 into the contest. Sophomores Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) and Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) each played one half in goal, with Cole stopping one shot in a flawless first half, and Goldman recording two saves to suffer her first loss of the season.

In the nightcap, Merrimack (1-1) won the 300th game in program history, all under head coach Gabe Mejail, in blanking Caldwell (0-1). Senior Lindsay Sheffield (Georgetown, Mass.) gave the Warriors the only goal it would need 3:20 into the game, and freshman Kristina McSharry’s (Plymouth, Mass.) goal pushed the lead to 2-0 at intermission. Merrimack busted the game open with four second-half goals, including three in the final five minutes, while sophomore Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, Conn.) and junior Nicole Snizek (Springfield, Mass.) combined to stop four shots for the shutout.

For Caldwell, freshman Annie LaForge (Wayne, N.J.) turned aside eight shots in her collegiate debut as the Cougars were outshot 36-6.
