Phone: (802) 654-1500COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College (1-2-0, 0-1-0 NE-10) dropped its first Northeast-10 contest of the season to Bryant University (1-1-1, 1-0-0 NE-10), 1-0, on Saturday at Doc Jacobs field, coming up just short in a tightly matched game. The scoreless tie was broken with just under nine minutes to play when sophomore goaltender Tim Williamson (Wakefield, R.I./Barrington) took down junior Bryan Gravel (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) to set up a penalty kick, and the only goal of the game.
Sophomore Thomas Madden (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) contributed three saves in the shutout victory, the Bulldogs’ first of the season.
Bryant dictated the pace of the game for most of the first half, maintaining control of the ball, and out shooting the Purple Knights 12-3. The Purple Knights were able to come out stronger in the second half however, holding a 7-6 edge in shots.
In a game with very few scoring opportunities, Saint Michael's had the first golden opportunity, coming with 16:32 left in the second half. Senior tri-captain Jerrod Hall (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) was able to pass the ball through traffic to a wide-open Vasili Kostakis (Andover, Mass./Andover) who was unable to locate the net, sending a shot wide to the left.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Tuesday, as the Purple Knights play a non-conference home game at 4 p.m. against Castleton State.
