Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Jerrod Hall (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) and sophomore Adam Percy (Weare, N.H./John Stark Regional) each tallied an unassisted goal and an assist as Saint Michael’s College scored five times in the second half to defeat Johnson State College, 5-0, in men’s soccer action on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field.
Seniors Pablo Noguera (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) and Bobby Self (Kailua, Hawaii/Kaiser) and sophomore Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington Memorial) also scored for the Purple Knights, while junior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) and freshman Tim Williamson (Wakefield, R.I./Barrington) stopped three shots to combine for the shutout. Saint Michael’s improves to 3-0 for the second consecutive season under head coach Tim Kaleita, matching the team’s best start in more than 20 years.
For the Badgers, senior Jefferson Hales (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) turned back 11 shots in the head coaching debut of former Middlebury College standout Kyle Dezotell, an assistant coach with the Purple Knights last season.
After a scoreless first half that saw Saint Michael’s outshoot the visitors 17-2, the Purple Knights broke through in the 61st minute, as Self left-footed a pass from freshman Matt Healy (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) for his first goal of the season. Fourteen minutes later, Noguera doubled Saint Michael’s lead, as he headed a shot past Hales for his second goal of the year. With 34 career points, Noguera is one point shy of cracking the program’s top-10 scoring list.
The hosts clinched the victory with three goals in the final 10 minutes, as Percy, Sherman and Hall all converted. Hall and Sherman tallied their second goals of the season, while Percy scored his second career goal.
Saint Michael’s plays its next four contests on the road, beginning with Wednesday’s 4 p.m. game at Castleton State College. The Purple Knights’ next home match is Sept. 21 against Northeast-10 Conference rival Franklin Pierce College at 4 p.m.
