COLCHESTER,
Vt. – Pace University scored with 5:23 remaining and remained undefeated
with a 2-1 victory versus Saint Michael’s College in Northeast-10
Conference women’s soccer action on Wednesday.
The contest marked the first-ever Saint Michael’s game to be played on the
College’s newly-built Christopher Duffy Artificial Turf Field at Doc
Jacobs Complex. Earlier in the day, the
University
of Vermont
and Marist College played a women’s soccer game on the field, as the
contest was moved from UVM’s natural-grass Centennial Field due to wet
weather.
For Pace (3-0), senior Amanda Thorman (Bayport,
N.Y.)
notched the game-winning goal off of an assist from junior Allison
Levine (Ellicott
City, Md.).
Senior Marta Anderson-Winchell (Bloomingburg,
N.Y.) also
scored for the Setters, while junior Jocelyne Durando (Monroe,
N.Y.)
stopped one shot to earn the victory in goal.
For the Purple Knights, senior Judy Cronin (Norfolk,
Mass./King Philip Regional)
scored on a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Sophomores Gillian Goldman
(Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Molly Cole (Dover,
N.H./Dover)
each played one half in goal. Goldman stopped three shots, while Cole
recorded one save in suffering the tough-luck loss.
Pace took advantage of the wind at its back to take a 1-0 lead into
intermission, as Anderson-Winchell scored on a direct kick 34:14 into the
contest. Cronin notched the equalizer 10 minutes into the second half,
beating Durando to her left on the penalty shot.
With the last 30 minutes of the contest played in a driving rainstorm,
Thorman gave the Setters the lead for good, as she received a crossing
pass from Levine and found the top corner. The Purple Knights could not
get off a shot in the closing minutes.
Saint Michael’s returns to action this weekend, as the Purple Knights host
the Doubletree Kick Off Classic, Sponsored by Sodexho Services. Saint
Michael’s opens the tournament on Saturday at
12 p.m. versus East
Stroudsburg University, followed by Merrimack College and Caldwell College
at 2 p.m. On Sunday,
Merrimack
and East Stroudsburg square off at 10 a.m., and Saint Michael’s and
Caldwell complete the tournament at 12 p.m.
