Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College and Merrimack College each won for the second consecutive day on Sunday to claim titles at the season-opening Clarion Kick Off Classic, hosted by Saint Michael’s on Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights held off Felician College 3-1 in the men’s game and 2-0 in the women’s contest, while the Warriors shutout Teikyo Post University 1-0 in the men’s match and 12-0 on the women’s side.
In the men’s tournament, Saint Michael’s scored twice in the final 12 minutes to best the Golden Falcons. Junior Jerrod Hall (Bennington, Vt./Mount Anthony Union) began the scoring with an unassisted goal 30:30 into the contest, and the score remained 1-0 until the 79th minute, when sophomore Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington) doubled the Purple Knights’ lead off of a pass from junior Joe Martinho (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet). Sophomore Eric Moore (Dublin, Ireland) countered three minutes later to pull Felician within 2-1, but freshman Dillon Klepetar’s (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) first career goal with five minutes remaining clinched the win.
Junior Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) stopped eight shots for Saint Michael’s (2-0), while junior Anthony Quarino (Columbus, N.J.) turned back five shots for Felician (0-2).
The men’s finale featured strong defense, with freshman Matt Dubois’ (Dracut, Mass.) first career goal 10:13 into the game providing all the offense Merrimack (2-0) would need. Senior Keith Boudreau (Forestdale, Mass.) stopped three shots to keep the Eagles scoreless, while freshman Marco Gaspar (Naugatuck, Conn.) recorded eight saves for Teikyo Post (0-2).
In the women’s classic, Saint Michael’s dominated Felician throughout Sunday’s opener, but couldn’t put the Golden Falcons away until early in the second half. Freshman Lindsey Cutts (Kittery Point, Maine/Traip Academy) opened the scoring 2:15 into the second stanza off of an assist from classmate Kelly Boulter (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional), and less than seven minutes later, freshman Dana Williams (Higganum, Conn./Loomis Chaffee) also scored her first career goal off of a Cutts’ pass to double the Purple Knights’ lead. The hosts would hang on from there, as Saint Michael’s held a decisive 39-4 advantage in shots.
Freshman Amanda Musarra (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) kept Felician in the game with 22 saves, while freshmen Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H./Exeter) and Molly Cole (Dover, N.H./Dover) combined for three saves and the shutout.
The women’s nightcap featured high-powered offense from Merrimack, as the Warriors scored at least 11 goals for the second straight day. Merrimack tallied nine goals in a 32-minute span of the first half to seize control, as sophomore Julie Anderson (Middletown, R.I.) and freshmen Shannon Dowling (Malden, Mass.) and Amy Pelletier (Hudson, Mass.) all scored twice in the period. Dowling completed a three-goal, two-assist day late in the second half, while senior Mary Blais (Marshfield, Mass.) also notched two goals for the Warriors.
Senior Victoria McKillop (Georgetown, Mass.) turned back 15 shots for Teikyo Post (0-2), while freshman Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, N.J.) stopped one shot for Merrimack (2-0).
The Saint Michael’s men return to action on Thursday when they host a 4 p.m. contest against in-state rival Johnson State College, coached by former Purple Knights’ assistant coach Kyle Dezotell. The Saint Michael’s women are off until Saturday, when they begin Northeast-10 Conference play with a 12 p.m. home game versus Southern New Hampshire University.
