SHIPPENSBURG, KUTZTOWN CLAIM TITLES AT CLARION CLASSIC
Saint Michael’s suffers 3-1 setback in opener; Golden Bears claim 4-2 win in finale

COLCHESTER, Vt. –Shippensburg University and Kutztown University each posted victories for the second consecutive day on Sunday to claim titles at the Clarion Field Hockey Classic, hosted by Saint Michael’s College on Doc Jacobs Field. Shippensburg commenced the day with a 3-1 victory versus the host Purple Knights, while Kutztown doubled up Southern Connecticut State University in the nightcap, 4-2.

In game one, Shippensburg opened the scoring 10:43 into the contest, as senior Erica Joline (Lancaster, Pa.) connected for her first goal of the year. Saint Michael’s evened the score 10 minutes later, with sophomore Lindsay Harrison (Brandon, Vt./Otter Valley Union) notching an unassisted goal for her first career tally. Less than two minutes later, however, the Raiders took the lead for good on an unassisted score by junior Kelsi Balum (Herndon, Pa.). Senior Lindsey Knupp (Treichlers, Pa.) completed the scoring midway through the second half, giving Shippensburg a key insurance goal.

Senior co-captain Tamsen Hunter (Center Tuftonboro, N.H./Kingswood Regional) stopped 11 shots, including eight in the first half, for Saint Michael’s (0-2), while junior Nora Luchansky (Whitehall, Pa.) and freshman Allie Rutland (Frederick, Md.) each stopped one shot for Shippensburg (2-0).

In the tournament finale, juniors Amanda Behney (Lyons, Pa.) and Lauren Blain (Marietta, Pa.) each scored twice as Kutztown held off Southern Connecticut. Behney opened the scoring just :18 seconds into the contest, and midway through the stanza, Blain connected off of a pass from Behney. Junior Lauren Tamborino’s (Stamford, Conn.) goal with 10 minutes left in the first half pulled the Owls within 2-1, and her second goal of the game 9:12 into the second period evened the score at 2-all. However, Behney gave the Golden Bears the lead for good less than one minute later, and Blain completed the scoring with 14:31 to go.

Sophomore Shauntaye Williams (Norwalk, Conn.) stopped four shots for Southern Connecticut (0-2), while junior Trista Hershey (Fredericksburg, Pa.) and freshman Sam Flowers (Harleysville, Pa.) turned aside five and two shots, respectively, for Kutztown (2-0).

Saint Michael’s opens its Northeast-10 Conference schedule on Wednesday at defending national finalist University of Massachusetts Lowell before returning home to face Bryant College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
