COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College and Merrimack College each received airtight defense and timely offense to post a pair of season-opening victories at the Clarion Kick Off Classic, hosted by Saint Michael’s on Doc Jacobs Field. The Purple Knights bested Teikyo Post University 2-0 in the men’s contest and 4-0 in the women’s match, while the Warriors defeated Felician College 1-0 in the men’s game and 11-0 on the women’s side.

In the men’s tournament, Saint Michael’s used single goals in each half to hold off the Eagles in the opener. Senior Pablo Noguera (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) scored what proved to be the game-winner 7:23 into the first half on an assist by sophomore Glenn Sherman (Arlington, Vt./Arlington). The Purple Knights added an insurance goal with 15:37 left in regulation, and freshman Scott Haungs (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) scored an unassisted goal for his first career tally.

Sophomore Patrick Melvin (Belmont, Vt./Black River) recorded his first career shutout for Saint Michael’s, stopping five shots, while freshman Marco Gaspar (Naugatuck, Conn.) notched three saves for Teikyo Post.

The men’s nightcap also featured strong defense, as both goalkeepers – Merrimack senior Keith Boudreau (Forestdale, Mass.) and Felician junior Anthony Quarino (Columbus, N.J.) – turned aside four shots. The lone goal of the game came midway through the first half, as Warriors’ senior Diego Gabadian (Montevideo, Uruguay) connected on a penalty kick.

Saint Michael’s also opened the women’s tournament with a shutout victory, as the Purple Knights scored three goals in the second half to pull away from Teikyo Post. Sophomore Mary Lyon (Pittsfield, Mass./Taconic) scored the eventual game-winner 16:23 into the contest on an assist by classmate Jenn Kerns (Waltham, Mass./Waltham). In the second period, the hosts received goals from senior Devin Camerlengo (So. Burlington, Vt./Rice Memorial), junior Judy Cronin (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) and freshman Kelly Boulter (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) to complete the scoring.

Senior Victoria McKillop (Georgetown, Mass.) kept the Eagles in the contest with 21 saves, while freshmen Gillian Goldman (Stratham, N.H.) and Laura Tuveson (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) stopped five and one shot, respectively, for the Purple Knights.

The women’s second game was a one-sided decision, as Merrimack scored eight goals in the first half to clinch the win. Senior Laurie Lamoureux (Leicester, Mass.) and freshmen Meagan Hess (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Julie Sullivan (Whitman, Mass.) each tallied two goals for the Warriors, with Sullivan also notching two assists. Sophomore Julie Anderson (Middletown, R.I.) added one goal and one assist for Merrimack, which held a 56-4 advantage in shots.

For Felician, freshman Amanda Musarra (Hasbrouck Heights, N.J.) stopped 34 shots, while freshman Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, N.J.) notched three saves for a shutout in her first career contest.
