Phone: (802) 654-2537SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Freshman Sarah Reed (DeWitt, N.Y./Jamesville-DeWitt) singled in a run in the first and pitched out of a jam in the seventh to help top-seeded Le Moyne gain a spot in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship game with a 2-1 win over fourth-seeded Saint Michael's. The Dolphins (37-7) will play No. 3 seed Bryant (28-15) at 12:15 p.m. in the championship. If Le Moyne wins, it will force another game at 3 p.m.
Le Moyne jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Lindsay Spaziani (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) and Jennifer Winters (Vestal, N.Y./Vestal) led off with back-to-back singles. Kristen DesLauriers (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) bunted, but Saint Michael's could not record the first out of the inning as an attempt to get the lead runner was missed its target. Reed knocked in one run and senior catcher Kim Kalec (Horseheads, N.Y./Horseheads) made it 2-0 with a single through the left side.
Saint Michael's (25-16) starter Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley) struck out the next three batters to limit the damage to two runs. She allowed just one more hit the rest of the way - a fourth-inning double to Lisa Flow (Holley, N.Y./Kendall).
Le Moyne starter Erin Phaneuf (Dracut, Mass./Catholic Central) cruised through the first six innings. She allowed just three hits and struck out five over the span without issuing a walk.
Saint Michael's, making its first-ever appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference tournament, rallied in the seventh. Senior catcher Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) and senior leftfielder Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) opened the seventh with back-to-back singles. The runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and pinch-runner Erin Poyant (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester) scored on an RBI single by sophomore first baseman Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham).
Reed entered the game with the tying run at third and the go-ahead run on second. She induced a pop-out and needed just seven pitches to strike out the final two batters for her program-record sixth save of the season.
