COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Jenny Mongeau’s (Westboro, Mass.) goal with five seconds left in regulation lifted fifth-seed Assumption College past fourth-seeded Saint Michael’s College, 11-10, in Northeast-10 Conference quarterfinal action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field. With the win, Assumption (7-8) advances to the NE-10 semifinals, where it will play at the top team in Division II, No. 1 seed Stonehill College, on Saturday at 1 p.m. Saint Michael’s, meanwhile, fails to reach the semifinals for the first time since 2001, and ends the year 6-7.

For the Greyhounds, freshman Jenna Goldstein (Duxbury, Mass.) tallied four goals and three assists, while Mongeau added three goals and one assist. Sophomore Tracey Conboy (Albany, N.Y.) chipped in two goals and one assist, while senior Marjorie Schepp (Middletown, N.J.) turned aside 16 shots, including 12 in the second half.

For the Purple Knights, senior Lauren Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass./Tabor Academy) notched three goals and an assist in the final game of her career. She finishes with 101 career goals and 144 career points, both totals fourth in program history. Junior Noreen Russo (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and freshman Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) added two goals apiece, junior Kristen Palazzo (Armonk, N.Y./Byram Hills) recorded a goal and an assist, and senior Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) stopped seven shots in the 60th and final game of her career.

Assumption opened the contest with three goals in the first 4:11, but the Purple Knights responded with four unanswered goals to take a 4-3 lead. Neither team could grab more than a one-goal advantage for the remainder of the period, and fittingly, the score was tied at seven at intermission. Goldstein had all four of her goals in the first half, while Piekarski and Russo tallied two goals apiece for the Purple Knights in the opening period.

After both sides traded goals to start the second half, the Greyhounds received consecutive goals from senior Lauren Swiatek (Quaker Hill, Conn.) and Mongeau to take a 10-8 lead. Saint Michael’s would not go away, however, as Piekarski cut the deficit to one with 16:25 remaining, and Soule knotted the score at 10-all with 6:44 to play. Saint Michael’s had a golden opportunity to take the lead with 30 seconds left in regulation, but was whistled for a foul while setting up for a free position attempt, setting the stage for Assumption’s full-length rush and Mongeau’s game-winner.
