Phone: (802) 654-2537WALTHAM, Mass. – Nine different Falcons scored as Bentley College beat Saint Michael’s, 10-6, in a Northeast-10 men’s lacrosse Quarterfinal Sunday afternoon. Bentley improves to 8-5 overall and advances to play the top-ranked team in all of Division II, Le Moyne College, Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 in Syracuse, while the Purple Knights finish their season at 8-6.
Saint Michael’s trailed just 6-5 2:36 into the second half following Mike Boerma’s (Concord, Mass.) third goal of the game, but that would be as close as the Purple Knights would get. Bentley rattled off the next four goals of the game, two on each side of the fourth quarter to take a 10-5 lead and all but put the game away.
Sophomore Rusty Baird (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) started the run with 5:56 remaining in the third quarter and gave the Falcons a two goal cushion. Junior midfielder Adam Zurick (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) scored 1:55 prior to the final quarter on an assist from junior Ryan Bouchey (Troy, N.Y./LaSalle Institute) and the Falcons were up three after three.
Sophomore attack Kevin Osborne (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Cape Elizabeth) made it 9-5 almost ten minutes into the fourth quarter and then freshman Dan Scavone (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) scored Bentley’s tenth and final goal on an assist from sophomore Craig Cormier (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) with 3:21 showing on the clock. The Purple Knights clawed one back through Ryan Lynn (New Cannan, Conn.) with 1:22 remaining to make the score 10-6, but Bentley would run out the clock for the win.
Boerma got Saint Michael’s off to a good start scoring the first goal just over four minutes into the game. Bentley responded by scoring five unanswered, including a pair by leading scorer sophomore Bob Catala (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Yorktown) in the first quarter. Cormier pushed the lead to four with 10:48 to go in the first half, but the Purple Knights would come storming back, scoring the final three goals of the half. Gregory Lazarus (Evanston, Ill.) scored with just 32 seconds remaining before the break, which cut the deficit to one at the half.
Bentley controlled play for much of the afternoon, out shooting Saint Michael’s 46-24 and earning a 42-25 advantage on groundballs. Ryan Rosa (Billerica, Mass./Malden Catholic) was impressive again for Bentley, winning 11 of his 16 face-off opportunities and Brian Nash (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield) was solid in goal making seven saves, while his counterpart Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass.) made 14 stops in the loss.
