In the opener, the Setters blanked the Purple Knights in 11 innings, 2-0, and in the nightcap, Saint Michael’s (21-12, 14-9 NE-10) matched the program record for victories in a season with a 3-0 shutout versus Pace (10-26, 8-14).
In game one, Pace senior Angela Locsin (San Martin, Calif.) outdueled Saint Michael’s sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) in earning the extra-inning win. Locsin threw all 11 innings, allowing just six hits and one walk while striking out nine, while Roberge also pitched a complete game, as she surrendered just five hits and one walk while fanning 10 batters.
After neither team could push a run across through 10 innings, Pace came through in the 11th, as sophomore Julia Hunt (Mahopac, N.Y.) knocked in the winning run on a fielder’s choice to Roberge, whose throw to the plate was not in time. Junior Sheila Mercado (Greeley, Colo.) gave the visitors a key insurance run with a two-out double to score Hunt. Junior Jenna Hutchison (Lodi, N.J.) was the only Setter with multiple hits, as she singled twice and stole a base.
For Saint Michael’s, senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) and freshman Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) both singled twice. Junior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) nearly won the game for the Purple Knights in the eighth inning, but her line drive to left with a runner on third base was foul by inches.
In game two, Roberge fired a one-hit shutout as the Purple Knights matched last year’s record-setting win total. Roberge did not walk a batter, fanned seven, and faced just two hitters over the minimum in improving to 18-4 on the season. Saint Michael’s scored all the runs it would need in the third inning, as freshman Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) singled and scored on a two-run blast by Gill, the program-record 18th homer of her career. Brooks scored the final run in the sixth inning, as she tripled with one out and came home on Katy Newland’s groundout.
Gill led the Purple Knights’ 10-hit attack in the nightcap with a double in addition to her homer, while Brooks, Katy Newland and senior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) all notched two hits apiece.
For Pace, Hunt broke up the no-hitter with a clean single to center field with one out in the sixth inning. She also suffered the hard-luck loss, pitching a complete game and striking out two batters.
Saint Michael’s plays its fourth doubleheader in as many days on Sunday when it visits Southern New Hampshire University at 2 p.m., and returns home to host Bryant University in a twinbill on Monday at 3 p.m. Pace plays at Saint Anselm College on Sunday at 12 p.m.
