COLCHESTER, Vt. – Plattsburgh State University recorded a pair of non-conference victories versus Saint Michael’s College in baseball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Cardinals pulled past the Purple Knights, 6-3, and in the nightcap, Plattsburgh (23-10) edged Saint Michael’s (4-10), 4-3.

In game one, junior Dan Hoffman (Commack, N.Y.) pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and no walks while striking out six. The Cardinals snapped a one-all tie with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, highlighted by a run-scoring double from freshman Todd Hughes (Malone, N.Y.). The visitors pushed across an unearned run in both the sixth and seventh innings to provide some insurance, and held on for the win.

Senior Jon Lerner (Valley Falls, N.Y.), junior Dave Waldron (Saranac, N.Y.) and sophomore John Coleman (Glen Falls, N.Y.) each singled twice for Plattsburgh. The Cardinals pounded out 11 hits in the opener, with every starter except the leadoff batter recording a hit.

For Saint Michael’s, senior David Deyo (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) had a pair of run-scoring doubles, plating junior Kevin Koscso (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) both times. Junior Paul Szwedo (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) added a triple and single, while senior Ryan Coonley (Albany, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pitched a complete game, allowing four earned runs.

In game two, Waldron scored the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as Plattsburgh won a see-saw battle. Waldron led off the final inning with a triple, and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by freshman Donny Coolidge (Plattsburgh, N.Y.). Waldron added a single to pace the visitors offensively, while Coolidge doubled and singled in addition to his game-winning RBI. Coleman singled twice and stole a base, while senior Dennis Lavin (Syracuse, N.Y.) also ripped two singles. Senior Seal Ellott (Colonie, N.Y.) pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing five hits and striking out three.

For the Purple Knights, Szwedo and freshman Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) each singled and scored in the second inning to give the hosts a 2-1 lead. Junior Kevin Harutunian (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) doubled and scored in the sixth inning to tie the score at three-all. In the bottom of the seventh inning, freshman Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) led off with a single, but was picked off first base. Sophomore William Gamache (Winooski, Vt./Rice Memorial) suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing three earned runs while fanning three batters.

Saint Michael’s and Plattsburgh complete their four-game weekend series with a twinbill in Plattsburgh on Sunday at 12 p.m. The Purple Knights’ final home games of the season are Tuesday versus New England College at 3 p.m.
