In the opener, the Hornets held on for an 11-8 win, and in the nightcap, Saint Michael’s (4-8) rebounded for a 14-1 victory versus Lyndon State (4-11).
In game one, Lyndon State scored seven runs in the first inning and held on for the win. Junior Adrian Guyer (Lyndon, Vt.) paced the Hornets with two singles and a double, scoring twice and knocking in a run. Freshman Jordan Royer (Lyndonville, Vt.) and sophomore Josh Wells (Portland, Conn.) each singled twice, while freshman Jesse Ballard (Alburg, Vt.) earned the win on the mound, pitching the first five-plus innings. Lyndon State took advantage of seven Purple Knight errors and four walks allowed.
For Saint Michael’s, junior Kevin Harutunian (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) ripped a two-run double and single, while junior Paul Szwedo (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) singled twice and scored two times. Junior Kevin Koscso (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) added an RBI double, while classmate Dan O’Connor (Worcester, Mass./Worcester Academy) suffered the loss, as he failed to record an out in the first inning. The Purple Knights had the tying run on base in the seventh inning, but a grounder back to the mound ended the rally.
In game two, O’Connor bounced back from his subpar outing in the opener, as he pitched a complete-game six-hitter for his first win of the season. O’Connor allowed just one walk and struck out four. Saint Michael’s wasted little time offensively, as the Purple Knights scored twice in the first inning and four more times in the second to open up a 6-1 advantage. The hosts completed the scoring and sealed the victory with six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Koscso led the attack with three singles, four runs scored and three RBI. Senior Eric Libardoni (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) and junior Kyle Hildebrand (Soth Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) each added a run-scoring triple and single, while senior David Deyo (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) ripped a two-run homer in the fourth. Freshman Evan Grenier Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) knocked in three runs with a pair of singles, while Harutunian and Szwedo both scored twice.
For the Hornets, freshman Rob Malloy (Vergennes, Vt.) singled twice, while Royer took the loss on the mound despite an RBI single. Sophomore Mike Swan (Southington, Conn.) added a triple.
Saint Michael’s returns to action on Saturday, as the Purple Knights host Plattsburgh State University in a doubleheader beginning at 10:30 a.m. Lyndon State plays at Fisher College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
