In the opener, the Purple Knights blanked the Chieftains, 5-0, and in the nightcap, Stonehill (13-21-1, 11-12-1 NE-10) bested Saint Michael’s (19-10, 12-7), 6-2.
In game one, sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) fired a complete-game two-hitter, walking just two and fanning 10 batters, to improve to 16-2 on the season. Offensively, classmate Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) led the attack with a two-run homer in the fourth inning to complete the scoring. She also scored twice and stole a base, while juniors Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) and Elizabeth Pigeon (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) each singled twice. Sophomore Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) added a single and drove in two runs as the Purple Knights scored two runs in the first inning without benefit of a hit and never looked back.
For Stonehill, freshmen Caitlin Flanagan (Cornwall, N.Y.) and Stephanie Folan (Glen Cove, N.Y.) each singled, while sophomore Tracey Cidlevich (Milton, Mass.) suffered the loss. The Chieftains did not have a runner reach third base in the opener.
In game two, Stonehill scored all its runs in the first three innings to earn the split. Sophomore Kristen Demick (East Hampton, Conn.), batting ninth in the order, paced the Chieftains’ 12-hit attack with two singles and a two-run triple in the third inning. Freshman Gina Vivona (Seaford, N.Y.) singled three times, while Folan added a single and run-scoring double for the victors. Freshman Jessica Sachse (East Williston, N.Y.) fired a complete-game three-hitter for the win, and didn’t allow an earned run.
For the Purple Knights, Brooks laced a double, while Currier and Roberge both singled. Junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched three innings for the loss, while freshman Jill Dalfonso (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) threw four scoreless innings of relief.
Saint Michael’s plays a doubleheader at Saint Anselm College on Friday at 2 p.m., and hosts Pace University for a pair of contests on Saturday at 10 a.m. Stonehill hosts league-leader Le Moyne College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
