COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Brandon Kobelt (Rye, N.Y./Fordham Prep) tallied a game-high four goals as Saint Michael’s College clinched a postseason berth with a 9-6 Senior Day win versus Saint Anselm College in Northeast-10 Conference men’s lacrosse action on Wednesday at Doc Jacobs Field. With the win, Saint Michael’s (8-5, 6-4 NE-10) advances to the NE-10 playoffs as the No. 5 seed, and will play a quarterfinal contest at No. 4 seed Bentley College on Sunday at 2 p.m. The loss eliminates Saint Anselm (8-7, 4-6) from playoff contention.

For the Purple Knights, freshman Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) added two goals and an assist, while Ryan Lynn (New Canaan, Conn./Kent School) notched one goal and two assists. Senior Nick Calnen (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) and junior Eric Libby (Cohasset, Mass./Cohasset) also scored, senior Mike Curley (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) recorded two assists, and freshman Jeff Hannon (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug Regional) stopped eight shots.

For the Hawks, freshman Mike Humphreys (Rockey Hill, Conn.) netted three goals, while classmate John Ortolani (Billerica, Mass.) scored twice. Freshman Mike McClain (Milton, Mass.) added a goal and an assist. Sophomore Andrew Roy (Westford, Mass.) turned aside 12 shots for Saint Anselm, which dropped three of its last four games to end the season.

Humphreys opened the scoring for Saint Anselm just 48 seconds into the contest, but Libby countered for the Purple Knights less than three minutes later. Humphrey’s second goal gave the Hawks their final lead at 2-1, as Saint Michael’s scored the next three goals – two by Boerma – to open up a 4-2 advantage.

Saint Anselm pulled to within 4-3 at halftime, and evened the score at 4-all early in the third quarter on Ortolani’s first goal of the game. Kobelt, however, gave the hosts the lead for good with the final two goals of the third period, and the Purple Knights hung on in the fourth quarter for the win.

Before the game, Calnen, Curley and Lynn were honored for playing in the final home contest of their career.
