NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Junior Jackie Rubino hit her fifth home run of the season to lead Merrimack to a 3-2 win in the first game, and senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn.) hit a leadoff home run in the seventh inning of the nightcap to lead Saint Michael’s to a 1-0 win in a Northeast-10 softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at Warrior Field.

Merrimack moved to 16-20 overall, 12-12 in the Northeast-10, while Saint Michael’s moved to 18-9, 11-6.

Rubino (Wilmington, Mass.) hit a two-run shot to left field to give Merrimack a 2-1 lead in the first inning of the first game. The Purple Knights came back to tie the game in the fourth inning, but junior Steph Simon (Windham, N.H.) hit an RBI single to score sophomore Clarissa Lewis (Peabody, Mass.) in the home half of the fourth to give Merrimack a 3-2 edge.

Sophomore Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt.) hit a leadoff home run to give Saint Michael’s an early 1-0 lead, and sophomore Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass.) hit an RBI double for the Purple Knights.

Freshman Kelly Knox (Framingham, Mass.) picked up the win, scattering six hits in seven innings with one strikeout and no walks. Sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt.) took the loss, allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk in six innings.

Both pitchers were solid in game two, with just one runner reaching third base before Gill’s home run in the seventh inning. Roberge picked up the win, allowing just three hits and two walks with five strikeouts in seven innings. Junior Courtney Wheeler (Hampton, N.H.) was the tough-luck loser, allowing five hits with six strikeouts and two walks in a complete game.

The Warriors have Wednesday off, then host Franklin Pierce in another Northeast-10 doubleheader on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. The Purple Knights stay on the road, facing Saint Anselm tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
