Saint Michael’s, seeded fourth in the eight-team tournament, improves to 11-3 overall with its seventh straight victory, and advances to Saturday’s NE-10 Semifinal match at top-ranked Bryant University. Fifth-seeded Merrimack finishes the season 7-7. The Purple Knights took control early. Senior Shannon Bergin (Milford, Conn./Lauralton Hall) and junior Heidi Murphy (Norfolk, Mass./King Philip Regional) won in No. 1 doubles, 8-6, sophomores Cara Bednar (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) and Liz Clemente (Latham, N.Y./Academy of the Holy Names) cruised in No. 2 doubles, 8-1, and freshmen Michelle Wood (Chatham, N.Y./Chatham) and Megan Conway (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) earned an 8-3 victory in No. 3 doubles. Saint Michael’s sealed the match with a pair of singles wins. Bednar bested Meghan Weller (Norwalk, Conn.) in No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0, and Clemente defeated Alison Mincarelli (Glastonbury, Conn.) in No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
