The second game of the day was called off due to rain. With the win, Saint Michael’s (17-6, 10-3 NE-10) sets a program record with its seventh straight victory, eclipsing the six-game winning streak set in April of 1979.
After spotting the Ravens a run in the top of the first inning, the Purple Knights countered with a run by sophomore Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) in the bottom of the frame. Brooks’ RBI double in the second plated classmate Caitlin McHugh (West Roxbury, Mass./Ursuline Academy) and gave Saint Michael’s the lead for good, 2-1. Another run from Brooks in the fourth inning boosted the Purple Knights’ lead to 3-1, and Saint Michael’s sealed the victory with its big fifth inning, highlighted by Brooks two-run single.
Brooks had three of the Purple Knights’ four hits, as she tripled, doubled and singled, driving in three runs and scoring twice. Junior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) singled for the other hit, and McHugh scored twice. Sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) improved her perfect record to 14-0 on the mound, as she struck out 12 and allowed just six hits. In the process, Roberge matched her own program record for victories in a season.
For the Ravens, sophomore Colleen Varone (Holliston, Mass.) singled twice and scored the final run in the top of the sixth inning. Freshman Kate Surgen (Southampton, Mass.) added two singles and an RBI, while senior Courtney Lemoie (Lincoln, R.I.) suffered the loss, pitching five innings.
Saint Michael’s plays a doubleheader at league-leader Le Moyne College on Thursday 3 p.m. before hosting Stonehill College on Saturday at 12 p.m. Franklin Pierce plays at Southern New Hampshire University on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
