COLCHESTER, Vt. – Junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) earned the win in both games as Saint Michael’s College swept in-state rival Lyndon State College in softball action on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the first game, the Purple Knights bested the Hornets in five innings, 11-2, and in the nightcap, Saint Michael’s (16-6) rallied for a 14-5 win over Lyndon State (3-9) in a six-inning contest.

In the opener, the Purple Knights scored nine times in the second inning to take control. Freshman Kerri O’Connell (Keene, N.H./Keene) singled twice and scored twice in the frame, and classmate Stephanie Ketcham (North Clarendon, Vt./Mill River Union) belted a grand slam as the hosts sent 13 batters to the plate and capitalized on three Lyndon State errors in the inning. From there, Jensen took over, as she retired the first 10 batters and finished with a complete-game three-hitter, striking out five.

Freshman Maggie Russell (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) led the Purple Knights’ 11-hit attack with three singles and three runs scored, while sophomore Caitlin McHugh (West Roxbury, Mass./Ursuline Academy) doubled and singled.

Junior Becky Armstrong (Lyndonville, Vt.) led the Hornets with a double and run scored, while freshman Angel Phelps (Brattleboro, Vt.) and senior Jennifer Kirchoff (Lyndonville, Vt.) each singled.

In the nightcap, Saint Michael’s scored 11 times in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally from a 5-3 deficit. The win stretches the Purple Knights’ winning streak to six games, matching the program record set in April of 1979.

Junior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) had a monster game in the nightcap. She belted a solo home run in the first inning, reached on a pair of walks, and broke the game open with a three-run homer in the sixth. Sophomore Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) laced three singles, including a pair of two-run hits in the sixth inning, scored three times and swiped two bases, while senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) singled twice and scored twice as a pinch hitter in the sixth inning. Jensen earned her third victory of the season, pitching the final two innings in relief of freshman Jill Dalfonso (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley), who started her first collegiate contest.

For the Hornets, Armstrong singled and added a two-run double, scoring twice, while four other players – Phelps, Kirchoff, sophomore Candace Houghton (
Waterford, Vt.) and senior Jodi Sicard (Beebe, Vt.) - ripped a single apiece. Freshman Josse Pateneaude (Canaan, N.H.) fired a complete game in the loss.

Saint Michael’s returns to Northeast-10 Conference Action on Wednesday with a 3:30 p.m. doubleheader versus Franklin Pierce College at Doc Jacobs Field. Lyndon State hosts Fisher College on Saturday at 1 p.m.
