PURPLE KNIGHT MEN CLINCH SEVENTH SEED IN NE-10 PLAYOFFS

Courtesy Merrimack Sports Information Phone: (802) 654-2537NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Freshman Andy Samara won at first single and first doubles to lead the Saint Michael’s College men’s tennis team to an 8-1 win over Merrimack College in a Northeast-10 match on Sunday afternoon.
Saint Michael’s improved to 5-7 overall, 5-6 in the Northeast-10. Merrimack fell to 2-9, 2-8 and was eliminated from the race for a spot in the Northeast-10 Tournament.
Samara (South Burlington, Vt.) won at first singles, 7-5, 6-2, and joined sophomore Andrew Bolduc (South Burlington, Vt.) for an 8-2 win at first doubles. Bolduc won a three-set match at second doubles, and senior Josh Holt (Woodstock, Vt.), freshman Christian van den Broek (Aerdenhout, Holland) and freshman Luke Lombardi (Manchester, Mass.) also won singles and doubles matches for the Purple Knights.
Junior Andy Severance (Gouldsboro, Maine) was the lone winner for the Warriors, earning a point for with a 9-8 win at fifth singles.
Merrimack wraps up the 2004-05 season on Monday, hosting Franklin Pierce at noon, while Saint Michael’s, which finished seventh in the Northeast-10 standings, will play at the to-be-determined No. 2 seed in the conference tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday.
