Roberge is now 12-0 this season.
In the opener, Saint Michael’s (12-6/7-3 NE-10) took an early lead and held off a Saint Rose (4-18/1-11 NE-10) comeback in the 5-3 triumph.
The Purple Knights led 5-1 entering the bottom of the seventh before the Golden Knights mounted a two-out rally. Freshman right-hander Kristen Calahan (Lagrange, NY/Arlington) hit an infield single and moved to second after freshman second baseman Danielle Encizo (Bayshore, NY/Saint John the Baptist) reached on an error. Both scored when freshman catcher Samantha Harrington (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) roped a double to right field.
At that juncture, Roberge, who exited the game in the fifth inning, re-entered to record the final out and thus ending the Golden Knight comeback.
Sophomore second baseman Casey Brooks (Colchester, VT/Colchester) went 2-for-3 and scored three times to lead the Purple Knight offense. Roberge combined to go 5.1 innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run.
In the nightcap, a freshman Lindsey Howland (South Portland, ME/South Portland) RBI ground out in the sixth inning proved to be the difference in the 4-2 Saint Michael’s victory. The Purple Knights added an insurance run in the seventh and Roberge went the distance and allowed six hits and two runs while fanning six.
Harrington produced both Saint Rose runs in the fourth inning, as she doubled and drove home both Calahan and Encizo, who had led off with singles. Freshman right-hander Melissa Salisbury (Schaghticoke, NY/Hoosic Valley) pitched well in relief despite suffering the loss, hurling 5.0 innings and allowing just six hits and two runs.
Junior third baseman Katy Newland (East Burke, VT/Lyndon Institute) led Saint Michael’s with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate, while Howland went 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.
The Saint Rose softball team travels to Easton, MA for a noon doubleheader against NE-10 foe Stonehill tomorrow.###PURPLEKNIGHTS###
