In the first game, the Purple Knights blanked the Greyhounds, 2-0, and in the nightcap, Assumption (6-11, 2-5 NE-10) notched an 11-3 victory versus Saint Michael’s (10-6, 5-3).
In game one, sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) improved to 10-0 on the season and became the program’s all-time strikeout leader as the Purple Knights won their third straight contest. Roberge fired a complete-game four-hitter, and with nine strikeouts, she passed Kara McManus ’02 for the most in team history with 247 career strikeouts.
Saint Michael’s managed just three hits off of Assumption starting pitcher Stephanie Brooks (Reading, Mass.), but got all the offense it would need in the second inning. Senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) led off with a walk and, after a fielder’s choice from classmate Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union), sophomore Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) belted a two-run homer to left field, her team-best second round-tripper of the season. Sophomores Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Caitlin McHugh (West Roxbury, Mass./Ursuline Academy) had the other Purple Knight hits, while Brooks was the hard-luck loser, striking out six in five innings of work.
In game two, Assumption scored all 11 runs in the final three innings to best Saint Michael’s in a contest shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. Junior Lisa Castillo (Methuen, Mass.) led the Greyhounds’ 12-hit attack with three singles and two runs scored, while sophomore Sandra Denman (Charlton, Mass.) singled twice and knocked in three runs. Senior Melanie Silva (North Dartmouth, Mass.) and sophomore Sarah Taglienti (Walpole, Mass.) each doubled and singled, while freshman Korina Salafia (Leominster, Mass.) ripped a solo home run. Junior Shalynn Napolitano (Lawrence, Mass.) pitched 4 2/3 innings to earn the victory.
For the Purple Knights, junior Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) doubled twice, while freshman and sister Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) singled twice and drove in a run. Brooks added a run-scoring double, while junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) suffered the loss.
The Purple Knights return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. league doubleheader at College of Saint Rose, and play their next home games versus in-state rival Lyndon State College on Tuesday at 3 p.m. Assumption hosts Stonehill College in a pair of contests on Saturday at 1 p.m.
