PURPLE KNIGHTS SPLIT WITH CASTLETON STATE IN DOUBLEHEADER
Spartans roll in game one, 11-3; SMC earns first win of season in nightcap, 13-1

Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael’s College and Castleton State College earned one convincing victory apiece in baseball action on Tuesday at Doc Jacobs Field. In the opener, the Spartans cruised past the Purple Knights, 11-3, and in the nightcap, Saint Michael’s (1-6) earned its first win of the season with a 13-1 drubbing of Castleton (8-12).
In the nightcap, senior Ryan Coonley (Albany, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pitched shutout ball into the seventh inning in throwing a complete-game six-hitter. He walked just one batter while striking out two Spartans. Saint Michael’s received excellent production from the top of its order, as the first four batters combined to go 12-for-17 at the plate with 11 runs scored. Junior Kevin Harutunian (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) led the way with a double, three singles and four runs scored, while senior Eric Libardoni (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) and junior Kevin Koscso (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) each ripped three singles and scored three times. Senior David Deyo (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) doubled and singled, while freshman Ryan Hawley (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) singled twice.
For Castleton, senior Chad Phillips (Huntington, Vt.) went 3-for-3 in game two, falling a home run shy of the cycle.
In game one, Castleton scored seven times in the last two innings to pull away for the win. Senior Travis Myers (Mountain Home, Idaho) pitched a complete game to earn the win, striking out five batters. Junior Chris Alger (New London, Conn.) tripled, doubled and singled twice to pace the offense, while freshman Anthony DiPietrantonio (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) added a doubled, three singles and three RBI. Sophomore Tim Zorio (Bennington, Vt.) also notched four hits, all singles, as Castleton pounded out 17 hits in the opener.
Libardoni led Saint Michael’s in game one with an inside-the-park home run. Deyo tripled twice, sophomore Jack Owens (South Boston, Mass./Bostin Latin) doubled and singled, and junior Kyle Hildebrand (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) singled twice.
Saint Michael’s plays its next five games on the road, beginning with Friday’s 3:30 p.m. contest at Mercy College, and plays its next home game on April 27 versus Middlebury College at 3 p.m. Castleton returns to action on Thursday at Williams College.
