COLCHESTER, Vt. – Vassar College spoiled the home opener for Saint Michael’s College in baseball action on Saturday at Doc Jacobs Field, as the Brewers took game one in 12 innings, 3-2, and won the nightcap, 15-9. Vassar improves to 5-11, while Saint Michael’s falls to 0-4.

In the opener, freshman rightfielder Mike Murn (Huntington, N.Y.) threw out junior Kevin Koscso (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit) at the plate to end the game and preserve the extra-inning win. The Brewers scored the go-ahead run in the top of the frame, as junior Ivan Cedillo (El Paso, Texas) led off with a single and, following two outs, a walk and a hit batter, scored on an infield error. Cedillo and senior Jesse Roman (Morrisville, Vt.) led Vassar with two singles and a run scored in game one, while senior Chris Maceira (Pound Ridge, N.Y.) added a single and a ninth-inning RBI on a suicide squeeze that gave the Brewers a 2-1 lead. Freshman Dan Orme (Cambridge, Mass.) pitched two innings of scoreless relief for the win.

For the Purple Knights, senior Eric Libardoni (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) singled twice, with his second hit driving in sophomore Jack Owens (South Boston, Mass./Boston Latin) with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Koscso also singled twice for Saint Michael’s, while freshman Evan Grenier (Bridgeport, Conn./Notre Dame Fairfield) singled and scored the other run for the hosts. Senior James Everhart (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone Senior) pitched nine solid innings in earning a no-decision, striking out five.

In game two, Vassar scored seven times in the fourth inning to take the lead for good, and sealed the victory with five runs in the seventh and final inning. Sophomore Marc Ramos (Rochester, N.Y.) led the visitors’ 16-hit attack with two singles, a double and two RBI, while sophomore John Mandel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) added three singles and three RBI. Sophomore Jon Feingold (Florence, Mass.) also singled three times, while junior Paul Noonan (Middlebury, Conn.) had two singles and three RBI in the win.

Owens led Saint Michael’s in the nightcap with a double, single, RBI and run scored, while senior David Deyo (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro) singled twice and drove in two runs. Junior Kevin Harutunian (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) added a single, RBI and three runs scored, and senior Ryan Coonley (Albany, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) pitched 3 2/3 innings in the loss.

Saint Michael’s returns to action on Monday, as the Purple Knights visit Norwich University for a 3 p.m. contest. The Purple Knights’ doubleheader against Southern Vermont scheduled for Sunday has been cancelled, as the Mountaineers are unable to field a full squad. Vassar next plays at Arcadia University on Sunday.
