Phone: (802) 654-2537COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Megan Lagasse (Newburyport, Mass./Governor Dummer Academy) tallied a game-high five goals as Saint Michael’s College won its home opener versus Southern New Hampshire University, 12-7, in Northeast-10 Conference women’s lacrosse action on Thursday at Doc Jacobs Field.
For the Purple Knights, sophomore Megan Rule (Bow, N.H./Bow) notched three goals and an assist, while senior Lauren Piekarski (East Sandwich, Mass./Tabor Academy) added two goals and one helper. Freshman Amanda Soule (Hartland, Vt./Woodstock Union) also scored twice, while senior Jess Anderson (Springfield, Vt./Springfield) stopped 10 shots for Saint Michael’s (2-2, 2-0 NE-10).
The Penmen were led by freshman Lucretia Joy’s (Portland, Maine) three goals, while classmate Nicole Downey (Rutland, Vt.) added a goal and two assists. Freshman Jessica Pyne (Sparkill, N.Y.) turned back 11 shots as Southern New Hampshire’s (5-3, 3-1) five-game winning streak came to an end.
The visitors opened the scoring four minutes into the contest on Downey’s goal, but Saint Michael’s responded with four unanswered goals, including two by Lagasse, to take a 4-1 lead. SNHU pulled to within 4-3 on goals by Joy and junior Lisa McEachern (Scituate, Mass.), but Lagasse’s third goal of the game gave the Purple Knights a 5-3 lead at intermission.
The Penmen again pulled to within one, 5-4, early in the second half, but the hosts tallied four of the next five goals to open up a 9-5 lead with 11:36 remaining. SNHU cut its deficit to 9-7, but three Purple Knight goals in the final five minutes sealed the victory.
Southern New Hampshire hosts Stonehill College on Saturday at 1 p.m., while Saint Michael’s returns to action on Sunday at Merrimack College at 2 p.m. The Purple Knights’ next home contest is Saturday, April 16 versus Southern Connecticut State University at 12 p.m.
