Phone: (802) 654-2537FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team completed play at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Friday with a doubleheader split. In the opener, the Purple Knights (5-3) edged Winona State University, 5-4, and in the second game, Southern Connecticut State University bested Saint Michael's, 4-1.
In Friday's opener, sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) earned her fifth victory of the tournament, as she pitched a complete game while recording six strikeouts. Roberge also roped a run-scoring single as Saint Michael's scored four times in the second inning and held on for the win.
Freshman Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) paced the offense with a double and two runs batted in, while senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy) added two singles and an RBI. Junior Elizabeth Pigeon (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans) added an RBI single for the Purple Knights.
In the nightcap, Southern Connecticut got the better of its Northeast-10 Conference rival, despite a complete-game effort on the mound from junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering). Sophomore Meg Currier (Greenfield, Mass./Stoneleigh-Burnham School) led the offense with two singles and the lone RBI, while senior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) also singled twice.
Saint Michael's opens the Northern portion of its schedule on Saturday, April 2, as the Purple Knights kick off NE-10 play with a doubleheader at Saint Anselm College beginning at 1 p.m. The Purple Knights' first home twinbill of the season is slated for Thursday, April 7 versus American International College starting at 3 p.m. at Doc Jacobs Field.
