FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Saint Michael's College softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. In the opener, the Purple Knights cruised past the University of North Dakota, 10-4, and in the nightcap, Post University notched an 11-2 win.

Versus the Fighting Sioux, Saint Michael's (4-2) scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back while pounding out 14 hits. Freshman Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) led the attack with two singles and a double, while junior sister Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) added a double and three runs batted in. Senior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) and sophomores Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) and Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) each laced two hits, while Roberge earned the win on the mound in a complete-game, three-strikeout effort.

In the nightcap, Post responded from yesterday's one-run loss to the Purple Knights by rolling to victory in a game shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. Saint Michael's managed just three singles in the contest: two by senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy), and one by Brooks. Gill added an RBI, while junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched a complete game.

Saint Michael's returns to action with three games on Thursday: 1 p.m. versus Fitchburg State College, 3 p.m. versus Winona State College, and 7:30 p.m. at Florida Gulf Coast University.
