CAPE CORAL, Fla.. - Sophomore Meggan Roberge (Sheldon Springs, Vt./Missisquoi Valley Union) fired a no-hitter to lead Saint Michael's College to a season-opening split in softball action at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic on Sunday. In the opener, Roberge and the Purple Knights edged Saint Thomas University of Florida, 1-0, and in Sunday's second contest, Wilmington College of Delaware notched a 7-5 victory.

In the opener, Roberge, the 2004 Northeast-10 Conference Freshman of the Year, notched 11 strikeouts to earn her second career no-hitter, with the other coming March 15, 2004 versus Purdue University-North Central. The Purple Knights' lone run came in the sixth inning, as sophomore Casey Brooks (Colchester, Vt./Colchester) led off with a triple, and came around to score on a passed ball.

Roberge added a double for Saint Michael's, while senior Whitney Christmas (Brattleboro, Vt./Brattleboro Union) went 2-for-3 with a pair of singles. The Purple Knights also recorded a 1-0 win versus Saint Thomas last season.

In the second game of the day, Wilmington held off the Purple Knights despite two singles, a pair of runs and a run batted in from freshman Katy Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute). Junior sister Meagan Newland (East Burke, Vt./Lyndon Institute) added a single and a run batted in, as did senior Noelle Gill (Deep River, Conn./Mercy). Christmas went 1-for-3 at the plate, while junior Raina Jensen (Portland, Maine/Deering) pitched the first four innings in taking the loss. Freshman Jill Dalfonso (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) pitched the last two innings in her collegiate debut.

Saint Michael's returns to action on Monday with two more games. The Purple Knights look to gain revenge against Wilmington at 9 a.m., followed by a 1 p.m. contest versus Post University.
