Phone: (802) 654-2537SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Sophomore Melissa Gagne’s (Eliot, Maine/Berwick Academy) hat trick lifted Saint Michael’s College to a win in the Purple Knights’ final home game of the season, 9-6, versus Salve Regina University in ECAC East women’s ice hockey action on Sunday at Cairns Arena.
For the Purple Knights, senior Meg Lyons (Boxborough, Mass./Acton-Boxborough Regional) tallied two goals and three assists, while freshman Jamie Bernardi (South Boston, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) added two goals and an assist. Junior Sarah Walker (Middlebury, Vt./Middlebury Union) and freshman Kate Morey (South Portland, Maine/Catherine McAuley) also scored, while senior Marcy Ring (North Attleboro, Mass./Saint George’s School) stopped 34 shots as Saint Michael’s (6-14-0, 4-11-0 ECAC East) added to its program record for victories in a season.
For the Seahawks, senior Courtney Caulfield (Canton, Mass.) scored two goals and an assist, while senior Danielle Darisse (Topsfield, Mass.) and freshman Aimee Provencher (Manchester, N.H.) chipped in a goal and an assist apiece. Senior Kristin Suslowicz (Stoughton, Mass.) turned back 47 shots for Salve Regina (3-15-2, 2-11-2).
Prior to the contest, Saint Michael’s honored its six seniors, all of whom started: Lyons, Ring, Ruth D’Amico (Roxbury, Vt./U-32), Holly BrandL (Meridan, Conn./Connecticut Clippers), Rachel Lamothe (Westboro, Mass./Westboro) and Kate Talbot (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead). Saint Michael’s also honored two senior volunteer assistant coaches: Erin Cleary (Milton, Mass./Milton) and Luc Choquette (Saint Albans, Vt./BFA-Saint Albans).
The Seahawks opened the scoring 8:30 into the contest on Caulfield’s redirected goal, but Saint Michael’s countered with backhanded tallies from Gagne at 12:04 and Lyons at 14:54 to take a 2-1 lead. Caulfield’s second goal of the period evened the score at 2-all, but the Purple Knights erupted for three unanswered goals in a 2:38 span late in the frame for a 5-2 lead. Gagne’s second score of the game with 3:09 left in the stanza gave the Purple Knights the lead for good, 3-2, and Bernardi’s power play tally and Morey’s first career goal completed the first-period scoring.
Saint Michael’s kept its offense rolling with three goals in the second period to open up an 8-3 lead after 40 minutes. Gagne completed her hat trick with a power play goal 4:07 into the frame, and after a shorthanded marker by junior Shannon Ryan (Hamden, Conn.) cut the Seahawks’ deficit to 6-3, Walker and Lyons lit the lamp midway through the stanza.
In the third period, Salve Regina cut its deficit to three goals on a pair of occasions, but Bernardi’s second goal of the game midway through the period helped the hosts hold off the Seahawks.
Saint Michael’s returns to action next weekend, as the Purple Knights visit league-rival Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for games on Saturday at 3 p.m., and on Sunday at 1 p.m.
