SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. – Tenth-ranked Bowdoin College scored three goals in the third period to pull away from Saint Michael’s College, 7-2, in ECAC East/NESCAC men’s ice hockey action on Friday at Cairns Arena.

For the Polar Bears, senior Shannon McNevan (Peterboro, Ontario) and junior Adam Dann (Burlington, Vt.) each scored twice, while freshman Colin Hughes (Charlottetown, P.E.I.) and juniors Andy Nelson (Marston Mills, Mass.) and Jon Landry (Montreal, Quebec) added a goal apiece. Junior George Papachristopoulos (Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Quebec) turned back 25 shots for Bowdoin (12-2-3, 9-2-3 NESCAC), which improves to 8-0-2 away from home this season.

For the Purple Knights, sophomores Derek Girouard (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic) and Jared Silver (Montreal, Quebec/Tabor Academy) netted goals, while junior David Mullins (Montreal, Quebec/Governor Dummer Academy), sophomore Quentin Williams (E. Hampton, Conn./Northwood School) and freshman Tim Dancey (Anaheim, Calif./Berkshire School) earned assists. Sophomore Derek Jackson (Clinton, N.Y./Gunnery School) recorded 37 saves, including 17 in the final period, for Saint Michael’s (7-10-2, 3-9-2 ECAC East).

Saint Michael’s opened the scoring just 45 seconds into the contest, connecting on its first shot of the game. Mullins dumped the puck into the Purple Knights’ offensive end, and Girouard, racing in from the left side, one-timed a shot from the left face-off circle for his 11th goal of the year. Bowdoin answered 12:06 into the frame, as Hughes roofed a power-play goal, and took a 2-1 lead with 2:09 left in the period on Dann’s redirected goal of a wide shot.

The Purple Knights evened the score 2:38 into the second period, as Silver took a drop pass from Dancey and wristed a shot off of the left post for his 11th goal of the season. However, a pair of 4-on-4 tallies by McNevan just 31 seconds apart midway through the stanza lifted the Polar Bears to a 4-2 lead.

Bowdoin sealed the victory with three goals 4:51 apart midway through the third period. Dann notched his second goal of the contest 8:49 into the frame, roofing a shot from point-blank range, and Nelson pushed the visitors’ margin to 6-2 at the 10:21 mark. Following a flurry of penalties, Landry completed the scoring with a 4-on-3 tally with 6:20 remaining.

Both teams return to action on Saturday, as Bowdoin visits Norwich University and Saint Michael’s hosts Colby College at 3 p.m.
